Friday march 29, Amador Valley 9 Vs San Ramon Valley 20

If there is any true rivalry for the Dons it’s with the San Ramon Valley Wolves. Three losses over three years all by one goal for each meeting. The opening few minutes were a whirlwind of fast drives and cuts by the wolves to take the lead by 2. Kalena Johnson would provide the first response by cutting through the center, 1-2. In a huge blow to the defense Grace French would roll her ankle and be taken out with less than 5 minutes elapsed from the game. Isa Clark filling in at the goalie spot would have a tremendous game despite her limited experience. Even notching up her first save. The entire defense would do their best to stem the tide of the San Ramon attack. Unfortunately, multiple turnovers on both sides of the field would punish the Dons into a 1-6 hole. Lily Manos would cut, receive, and shoot low to give Amador some hope. The Wolves would continually cut and pass into tight windows to successfully score. Even when Amador would earn a defensive stop, turnovers would kill the momentum. By half the Dons were stunned with a 4-14 deficit.
Amador would come out the half strong and attempt a surge. Bella Mayo, Catherine Murphy, and Mady Sweeney would close the gap to 8-14. San Ramon would then regain their composure and mercilessly attack the goal. They used their height advantage and timed passing routes to perfection. Not once did San Ramon substitute out their starters in the second. You can view this in multiple ways. I feel they did so out of respect for our ability to come back at any moment. The truth is we are a very good team playing against another high-level opponent playing their perfect game. Amador would fall 8-20 in this matchup. Suffering their worse defeat in three years the girls should have been distraught. The amazing coaches held up their players and offered many words of encouragement. We will see teams like San Ramon and Granite Bay again in the near future. Many of the mistakes committed by the Dons can be coached and corrected. With the right frame of mind and determination even these teams can be defeated. I can’t wait to see when that happens.
