IMPORTANT HEALTH ALERT FROM DOUGHERTY VALLEY- Swimmer diagnosed with Bacterial Meningitis

Posted by Swim on Mar 22 2017 at 01:48PM PDT in 2016-2017

Parents,

Today we got the following email from Dougherty Valley.

You are receiving this email because members of your swim team competed in a swim meet this weekend at Dougherty Valley High School.

This evening we received information from Contra Costa Public Health that a Miramonte High School student that participated in a swim meet at DVHS last Saturday (3/18) was diagnosed on Sunday (3/19) with bacterial meningitis. Thankfully, the illness was caught early.

Although the risk of developing the disease is low, parents should be aware of the signs of bacterial meningitis including, but not limited to, fever, headache, stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, weakness, and/or a rash that does not blanch on pressure. If any of these signs or symptoms should develop during the next week, you are advised to take your child to your physician or to the emergency room for evaluation. Antibiotic treatment is usually successful if administered early.

At Dougherty Valley, the health and safety of our students is our top priority. We are working with Contra Costa Public Health on this issue and will provide additional information as it becomes available. If you have any questions, you may contact Contra Costa Public Health at (925) 313-6740. In addition, our staff at Dougherty Valley HS is here to assist in any way. Please see attached fact sheet distributed from Contra Costa Health Services for more information.
