Yesterday afternoon, four Amador Valley sophomores headed to Southern California to compete in the Footlocker Western Regional race, held at Mt. SAC. Jack Gray, Aidan McCarthy, and Jacob Lawrence all competed in the sophomore boys’ race. Footlocker typically uses a 3.1 mile layout, which is almost a quarter mile longer than the traditional course, but with construction in the stadium, I am not sure exactly what layout they used this year (the result still lists the distance at 3.1 miles though). Jack led the way with a fourth place finish in a huge field of 404. His time of 16:46 was about 20 seconds off of the winner, Dublin’s Chris Middleton-Pearson. Aidan McCarthy also ran a strong race, finishing in 26th in a time of 17:20. Jacob rounded out the Amador Valley contingent in 70th place, running a time of 18:04. Although junior Aidan Boyle qualified for the state meet this year, these three sophomores make up the backbone of our scoring group in cross country and this result provides even more reason to be very excited about what is to come in the next couple of years of Amador Valley boys’ distance. Also traveling down South was Derica Su. Fresh off of her 45th place finish at the State Meet, Derica felt like she had another good race in her legs and she was right. Derica also ran in the sophomore race and finished in 9th place overall out of 261 runners in a time of 19:51. The winner of her race was also a familiar face as Monte Vista’s Kelli Wilson came through the line first. Full results of the meet can be found at http://footlockercc.com/2017/results.shtml.

Congratulations to Aidan Boyle, who was named to the All-NCS third team and to both Hope Bergmark and Derica Su, who were named All-NCS Honrable Mentions.
