GO DONS!

“Oh, what a night, Late December back in ’63. What a very special time for me As I remember, what a night, ….so the song goes, well it is actually 2019 and early March, but the Amador Don’s Varsity Girls Lacrosse team brought back memories of the classic song by the Four Seasons. Because it was indeed, “oh what a night”. Taking unselfishness to a whole new level, The Dons saw almost every member of the team score in a resounding victory over the visiting Granada Matadors. Improving their record to a perfect 2-0 on the young season, Coach Chelsea Randal had to be pleased by her squad’s teamwork.

The Don’s got early goals from Catherine Murphy and Mady Sweeney, and then faster than Chris Murphy could make his coffee announcement, it was Isa Clark, then Bella Mayo, then Marley Diligent, then Lily Manos, then Kalena Johnson to make it 7-0 Dons.

Granada struggled to move the ball past midfield all night and when they did, the Dons defense was there to turn away the Matadors. Grace French, Katelyn Sweeney, Maddie Riddle, Alexis Bayani and Erica Haley were like scavengers feeding off intercepted passes and scooping up ground balls. Granada finally got a goal on the board but the Dons responded immediately, Sharing the ball, and making sure that each member got a turn at crashing the scoring party. Sam Nimmo and Sophia Shiblaq scored to make it 9-1 Dons and the rout was on. As the theme of the night continued, French and Bayani fired goals into the back of the net and it was 11-2 dons at half.

The second half followed the script and feisty freshman, Haley scored her first varsity goal and Katelyn “the Ripper” Sweeney, ripped the twine moments later. Mayo, Nimmo and Mady Sweeney added second goals to their personal tallies and the Dons closed out a 16-4 win over the overmatched Matadors.

Amador Goalies, Claire “Jimmy” Lemelin and Blake Guidice each had strong games in the net for the Dons as the Matadors found it difficult to find any happiness on the offensive end of the field.

The Dons take on St Ignatius High School and California High School next week and the road to victory will have many more perils. Both St Ignatius and Cal beat the Dons last year so revenge will be in the air and the Don’s teamwork will need to be on full display!!

The Amador Valley Dons have high expectations this year with most of the squad returning. Many of the players have been excited to get the season rolling. Unfortunately, the Dons played with reduced strength due to a state playoff run in basketball. Those players will be rejoining the team at Friday’s matchup against Granada. Returning head coach Chelsea Randal and assistant coach Sara Quero seem to have their team highly pumped up for the first game.

The first draw immediately went to Acalanes, but tight defense, secured a turnover and the Dons get after it. Bella Mayo working the circle but is pushed for a penalty. At the top of the 8 meter she quickly feeds Sam Nimmo in the short corner who charges in and scores. A draw battle at the center sees Marley Diligent hit the deck and the ball is scooped by Mayo. Mayo gets a self-start on the restraining line and hits Catherine Murphy in the wing who drives down and scores, 2-0. The Dons engage in some back and forth exchanges with Acalanes. Acalanes finally gets down and sets up their offense. They circle through the X and begin to rotate inward. The Amador defender is pacing side by side with the attacker as she drives toward goal, but Alexis Bayani crashes in from the opposite block to draw the charge for a turnover. An unfortunate midfield turnover resulted in a nice drive by Acalanes. Luckily, goalie Claire Lemelin tallies her first save of the season and finds an outlet pass. The Dons quickly go bang, bang, bang with sharp passes to traverse the midfield. Sophia Shiblaq feeds Lily Manos for a low shot that ricochets off the goalie’s foot. Mayo then receives the ball in the right short corner and fires for her first goal of the season. After winning the draw Acalanes holds and tests the Amador defense once again. The defense eventually forces a drop that’s picked up by our goalie. A quick outlet to Bayani, who feeds Grace French, who zips another pass to Diligent, finally Diligent finishes the drive to the top of the 8. Diligent then feeds Nimmo at the block for another quick score, 4-0. The Dons passing and catching was clearly a highlight in the early going. Sole freshman Erica Haley makes her defensive debut as Grace French moves to the draw circle. French immediately wins the draw and feeds Kalena Johnson for a quick strike and goal. Acalanes finally answers after the draw as their swift midfielder draws out her defender in isolation and curls back for an open shot, 5-1 with 10:08 left in the half. The Dons next defensive sequence was holding strong. Multiple slides prevented successful penetration into the 8 meter. Defense even earned a forced drop but the ball bounces in Acalanes favor and allows them to drive and shoot low for another quick goal. Another big sequence of back and forth turnover resulted in Amador once again settling down on defense. French would elevate her stick to block a simple pass, recover the ball, and transition to Johnson who would run the mid. Johnson feeds a running Murphy who drives to the low block and fires for goal 6-2. Another defensive sequence results in a Haley ground ball pickup. French would receive the transition and carry downfield. Shiblaq would receive in the short corner and beam a pass to Mayo charging down the center for goal. Nimmo would work the low block by running out and curling back on her lone defender for another goal. Bella would be on the receiving end of a tough draw. You could tell she was fired up as she drove hard through the 8 curling around two defenders for her third goal. Lily Manos would pile on the scoring from the penalty mark next. The next draw would see Shiblaq hit the deck with an Acalanes player doing a summersault and roll over her. Somehow the ball is awarded to Acalanes. It was a moot point as the purple wall holds and sends the offense on their way. Mayo is rewarded a push and sent to the top of the 8. She unselfishly feeds a waiting Diligent in the short corner who winds up an incredibly fast shot for goal to end the half 11-2. Overall quite an impressive showing for Amador.

We opened the second half with Blake Guidice making her grand return in goal after a year away from lacrosse. Amador comes out flat defensively in the second and allows Acalanes to isolate and drive for either goals or penalties. Acalanes rattles off 4 successive goals to make the game interesting at 11-6. Acalanes was even set for another penalty shot but the attempt sees an Amador defender make stick to stick contact. The loose ball is scooped by Diligent and the offense went to work. Shiblaq takes the transition to the left wing and finds a lone Johnson in the center. Johnson gives a quick fake and shot to score. After a check attempt, Mayo received a 2-minute yellow card. Despite being short on defense Amador holds tight. On the other end Shiblaq converts a penalty to score despite being short handed. Acalanes wins the draw and Amador once again holds defensively. Erica pushed the ball up the field for the purple. Mayo takes the rock and curls her defender at the top of the 8. Murphy drives in to draw her defender away. It’s lacrosse’s version of the pick and roll. Mayo finishes the drive in for goal. Acalanes responds by converting a quick penalty shot. We get a good offensive set moving but the shot pipes and the Dons go to defense. We finally get a hold and the ball goes back and forth between the teams. Mayo finally gets a fast break and weaves through the center strong going to goal despite contact, 15-7. Acalanes once again responds with a penalty attempt, but Guidice tallies her first save the season. Despite good defense Acalanes earned a strong penalty shot for goal. The Dons would close out strong. Grace French would take a penalty shot for goal. Shiblaq would follow up with a twirling drive while simultaneously changing approach levels before firing low for goal. The final tally would be 17-8. Amador had incredible ball control for most of the match and was able to over power Acalanes with a number of offensive weapons. Defense did it’s job by forcing multiple turnovers. The word on the street is that the coaches have several adjustments in mind to further improve the team. However, as far as entertainment the first game of the season was a success despite the intermittent torrential rain. The next matchup will be against Granada High at home on Friday at 7pm!
