Week in Review: Time Trial and Parent Meeting

Posted by Coach Ozzie at Feb 18, 2018 3:34PM PST

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It was a good day on the track yesterday and in a more limited version, in the field (shot put was the only field event contested). I shared the following quick recap of the races on the team facebook page: The Amador Valley Track and Field team recorded its first marks of the season this morning. On a beautiful February day, the team ran an abbreviated program of the 100m, 1600m, 3200m, 400m, and shot put. Junior Elijah Weetman stood out with a near PR in the 100m at 11.86 and a very strong opening 400m in 51.33. Rohit Menon also got his season off to a good start by winning the 100m in 11.60. The Sanguinetti sisters (Ali and Sara) led the charge in the ladies sprints with Ali winning the 100m in 13.89 and Sara winning the 400m in 64.48. Madison Perez got her season off to a winning start, claiming the 1600m in 5:58.68 and Becky Laurence grabbed a victory in the 3200m in a time of 12:03.32. Jordan Urquhart won the boy’s shot put with a quality starting mark of 36 feet, 1 inch and Blake Guidice took the girls’ event in 21 feet 1 inch in her track and field debut. It was the boys’ distance team that really held the day today as freshman Euan Houston put up an impressive 4:53.58 to win the 1600m and sophomores Jack Gray and Jacob Lawrence dueled over the last 800m to each come up with big PR’s and near top 10 marks. Jacob took the lead with 550m to go, but the move proved to be a little early as Jack passed him back on the back stretch. Jack came home with the win in 9:48.31 (a 9 second PR) with Jacob not far behind in 9:51.89 (a 34 second PR!). Those are terrific times from our lower classmen in the first meet of the season. Full results from the time trial are available at http://diablotiming.com/results/2018-02-17/.

Aside from the highlights and the winners, there were many excellent debuts and PR’s on the day. I look forward to sharing those with you in more detail as we get a new database set up to be able to share those. I hope that the meet gave all of our first timers a taste of what track and field is all about and gave everyone a sense of where their fitness is right now and where we want to and need to go.

As much as I can I try to put videos of all of the races on youtube. Because it is often athletes filming who are untrained in filming (I’d rather they be great runners than videographers), sometimes the quality leaves something to be desired, but most of the races we run are online. I always think it is a good idea for an athlete to watch his or her own race to see what he or she can learn and improve upon…or just as a celebration of a great performance. For parents and families, it can also be cool to watch the races. My youtube channel is https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJW2TUqL8xkLTyj_bX6PFaQ?view_as=subscriber, which is also linked to teampages.

It was also great to see all of the parents at the parent meeting after the meet. Thank you to all of you who were able to make it. Just to reiterate a few things.

-This year’s team handbook is located at https://teampages.s3.amazonaws.com/documents/184092/2018_Team_Handbook_Official.pdf?X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&X-Amz-Credential=AKIAJAICNWZ7DDQUF76A%2F20180218%2Fus-east-1%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&X-Amz-Date=20180218T184807Z&X-Amz-Expires=21600&X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&X-Amz-Signature=78e3f7b0bf7fe43edf8fe1c5f3eb324ac605ba14c46a2f6e9addb920a1e723bb. The handbook is designed to answer all questions and give information to those who are new to the team and returners to the team (both parents and athletes). There is probably no one who needs to know every page of it, but there is something there for everyone. It should be a good resource.

-The 2018 meet schedule is located in the team handbook as well as in a standalone document in the “documents” section of teampages. The documents section is about halfway down the left hand side.

-Team Pictures will take place on Thursday, March 1st. More to come on that very soon.

-We are hoping that we can use the Dan Gabor Invitational can be our only fundraiser this year. We are hoping to bring in $20000 for the team to enter meets, replace equipment, and provide recognition to our athletes at the end of the season. To make this meet run smoothly we need help from our parent community. Please sign up to volunteer for at least one time slot to help at the meet. If you are new to teampages, we have been sending out volunteer requests and will continue to do so, so please be on the lookout for that.

-Registration payments. Thank you to everyone who made a registration payment yesterday at the parent meeting. If you have not made a registration payment yet, please remember that any shortfall we experience comes out of our fundraising efforts and then will have to be made up for with additional fundraising. If you have not paid your registration yet, you can do that at the student activities office (all checks should be made out to Amador Valley Boosters" and you should put track and field in the memo portion of the check. You can also make a payment by credit card on teampages.

-Uniforms-Uniform deliveries have been delayed, but we are hoping they are delivered to us ASAP. If an athlete has a uniform from last year or any other year, the athlete does not need a new uniform. If an athlete is new to the team or has lost his or her uniform, then he or she will need to purchase one. The uniform consists of shorts and a uniform top. Each piece costs $40 (so $80 for the entire uniform). When they come in, we will begin to distribute them.

-Other apparel-Each athlete is required to have 3 items. The first is a set of black sweats (these can be purchased anywhere, but we will give athletes an option to purchase them from an online store). Athletes also must have a long sleeve Amador Valley Track and Field shirt. If the athlete has one from last year, it is not necessary to purchase a new one. We also ask that each athlete purchases this year’s team t-shirt. Athletes who have the shirt from cross country season are not required to buy the track shirt (they are the same except that one says cross country and the other says track). There are also other items that are optional (a polo shirt, a duffel bag, and a sweatshirt). The customized Amador Valley items can be purchased from an online store and will be delivered to your house. Orders can be made at http://www.eastbayteamshop.com/Flyer/3c5e7c40-4639-48e4-bd90-9cc2e1023e5f until February 26th. We are still finalizing the non-customized online store (they have to be separate stores) and will get you that information when it is completed.
