San Diego team Brings Wind!

Posted by AVHS Girls Soccer- VARSITY at Jan 6, 2019 4:05PM PST

If you weren’t able to attend the game, the basic sense was this:
Jan. 5, 2019 Saturday’s game versus San Marcos was very WINDY, and produced unpredictable play for both teams. Although the rain held off, cold harsh winds were on the NOON menu!

Amador girls soccer came out quickly with a 5 minute press upon San Marcos High School’s goal; the bright spot in the first half; though unsuccessful to the net. Soon thereafter, the wind became THE factor in the game and Amador quickly saw the ball in their defensive end often.
In the first half, AVHS attacked successfully less than a handful of moments, struggling to keep the ball at their feet and in control. San Marcos on the other hand, utilized the winds and the momentum of stray rolling balls to continue their presence in the AV back field, and soon that pressure forced some chances and free kicks for SMHS. Among the several held balls by AVGoal Keeper Bailee Alvarez Walls, there was a free kicks that was sent screeching across the AV box, propelled by force and helped by wind, into the side netting of the Don’s net. 1-0 San Marcos. Play continued to force the Don’s to play in their own end, and weather and errors produced another SMHS goal. Unfortunate circumstances for AVHS Dons Girls Soccer Team. 2-0 San Marcos.
Second half, the Don’s hoped to take the same advantage of wind, and did so, but the many chances that were open couldn’t be secured right off… The opponents seemed to handle the ball at their feet more often than AV had in the first half-perhaps their vocal coach had used the Don’s experience in the first half as an example… the wInds had died down a bit and AVHS had their work cut out as they were down 2-0.
Steady play in the SMHS end did successfully produce two goals from the consistent presence of Amador in the opponents end; one by a corner kick from Griffen to an awaiting head, back post by Maille Smith, and the other via a wind assisted ball served across the net by Smith, which was blown to corner top net. Several teammates were central to secure that goal, yet the wind had its way first. 2-2 tied. San Marcos got fired up from their sideline and pushed, pushed to gain possession and intermittent control, and even though the back and forth wind persisted, the opponents managed to draw a foul in the AV goal box, which referees whistled as a PK. Although GK Walls picked the correct side to dive, her outstretched arms just missed saving the steady shot by SM. It’s 3-2 . Minutes ticked by and Amador flew to use effort, wind and control to change the course of the game- a flurry of AVHS energy ensued, including shots on goal and goal box flurries of shots blocked by SM, but just as we began the first half, the players came away without the final goal to tie the game up! The final whistle ended the game 3-2 San Marcos High School as the victors.

4-FLOCKING FUN FOR PLAYERS, & TEAM BONDING is HOPING TO HELP OUR PROGRAM.
A handful of players have been signing on to help, and some have simply committed verbally to meet up with them all. Great that players are helping to do work that raises money for their uniforms and equipment. HOWEVER, Sara Campbell, our organizer, needs to see the SignUpGenius dates FULL, in ORDER TO KNOW THAT *SHE HAS BODIES TO HELP DO THE WORK!!!* Rumor has it that players have formed “teams” that will fill the dates ‘as they come’, but this isn’t how this works most efficiently, as SARA can’t offer dates to our paying customers when she isn’t confidant players are available!

PLEASE have team players sign onto the following link (and please coordinate a driver, as needed for non-driving players) .

So it was Finals Week for the players… AND we had Tuesday , Thursday, Friday and Saturday games. Wow.
We started Tuesday 12-18 versus Livermore.
And GRINCH it was… 1-0 was the final (Livermore) and the goal against AV was secured in the first minute! The rest of the game was a battle of our midfielders vs. a swift turning Cowboy, AND our forwards and the physicality of the Livermore backline!! A flurry of AV shots in the last few minutes made it possible to WIN- just couldn’t get it to drop..
Thursday 12-20 was against Granada. The Matadors came out to play and Amador wanted to match it- desperately wanting to regain strength and poise from their previous match. Throughout the game, Amador had few moments to score, more crosses than anything, some balls connecting with the cross bar but Granada had a few which they capitalized upon; 1 un-orthodox scrappy goal and 1 well struck ball off a textbook wide ball to center forward waiting. 2-0 Matadors. SANTA ISN’T WORKING in AV FAVOR.
At the Tri-Valley Classic Tournament, Friday was a cold evening game; Taft vs. AVHS. AV regained their team play and basically wrecked havoc on Taft Team; W 7-0. The team element came back in focus and Reedy assisted Kieran/Penny Murphy went to the sky for a goal over the GK/Kennedy Mayo was assisted by Maille Smith/Reedy got in on the goal scoring for number 4/Allison Jones earned her goal before halftime. In the second half, Maille Smith hit net and freshman Natalie O’Sullivan earned her first AVHS goal! Overall, the play was spread across the team; a great team win. And fun.
Saturday Tri-Valley game pitted Clayton Valley HS vs the Dons. As the game wound up, Amador had notched good passing and team tactics to hit the net 2 times n the first half; Forward Smith and Midfielder Wallace made AVHS up 2. The game seemed to have a steady favor for AVHS! Visitors CVHS had only 1 score to their card, soon thereafter, but as the second half began, refereeing was less stringent and Clayton VHS used its leniency to tackle tough, unnerve the Dons and attack quickly. Before long, the Dons were tied up, and the Clayton players continued to pursue physically, with quick bursts to get in front of the goal and it was 2-3. Amador struggled to get their feet back and in control of the game, and the whistling by refs didn’t help. Clayton scored a long high ball off a free kick…2-4. Ultimately, Amador rebounded with a last 10 minute thrust of energy, and to their credit scored to make it 3-4 yet missed the rest of the flurries, which ended the game. Another GRINCH moment for the week!
